30-foot Chihuly piece could permanently become part of Meijer Gardens’ collection
The outdoor portion of Dale Chihuly’s exhibition at Meijer Gardens is drawing to a close, yet the 30‑foot Chartreuse Icicle Tower has emerged as a photographic favorite and a visual anchor for visitors.
To keep the tower in place permanently, the garden has launched a $500,000 fundraising campaign that invites community members to contribute. Donations have already surpassed $300,000, and a donor plaque will be displayed in the English Perennial Garden once the goal is met.
The striking sculpture, situated at the entrance to the English Perennial Garden, comprises roughly 1,800 blown‑glass pieces mounted on a steel armature. That armature will be replaced with stainless steel to withstand Michigan winters, and the tower will be reinstalled in spring 2027 after a brief de‑installation.
Beyond preserving this iconic work, the initiative underscores Meijer Gardens’ commitment to involving the public in shaping its permanent collection, while the broader Chihuly show—one of only two worldwide—remains on view indoors through early 2027.
