Akron Art Museum’s historic 1899 building reopens Sept. 23 following $12.5 million renovation
The Akron Art Museum is set to reopen its 1899 former post office, now the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Building, after a $12.5 million overhaul that adds over 2,000 sq ft of gallery space and a dedicated classroom.
The renovation respects the building’s historic character while introducing contemporary amenities—video and digital art labs, expanded visitor services, a family care room, and the J.M. Smucker Co. Idea Machine, an interactive studio for makers of all ages.
The reopening will showcase three new shows: Idea Machine by CHIAOZZA, an ever‑changing participatory installation; The Surrealist Impulse, a survey of Dada, Surrealism and Art Brut featuring Dalí, Miró, Magritte and others; and Shana Moulton: Meta/Physical Therapy, an immersive video work exploring wellness and consumer culture.
The museum frames the project as a community investment, funded by the Knight Foundation, state capital, and local donors, and will host a week‑long celebration with free events, garden displays, and special previews for members.
