Beloved 'cheese' sculpture at Glenside park needs paint after racist graffiti

The Cheese sculpture at Glenside Weldon playground has been a bright focal point for generations, conceived by mid‑century sculptor Jim Miller‑Melberg and refreshed during a 2022 renovation funded by nearly $80,000 of community donations.

Over a recent weekend, the concrete wall was scarred with swastikas and an anti‑Black slur, prompting volunteers, township staff and the Glenside Civic Association to scrub away the hate. The vandalism also damaged a new map mural and a playground sign, all now awaiting fresh coats of paint.

Local art consultant Rosalie Guzofsky of the Abington Art Center oversaw the preservation of the piece, emphasizing its role as a playful landmark. In response, faith leaders, neighbors and officials have organized a unity rally for Thursday at 5:30 p.m., aiming to reclaim the space and reaffirm its message of community togetherness.
