Chandrakant Channe’s ‘Black Whispers’ to be showcased at Jehangir Art Gallery
Chandrakant Channe presents ‘Black Whispers’, a poignant collection of paintings, plate lithographs and drawings at Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, running from October 27 to November 2. The show invites viewers into the world of Pardhi children, whose lives Channe has documented for over a decade.
Rather than literal portraiture, Channe employs visual metaphors to echo the children’s unspoken experiences. The dominant hue of black works as a conduit for deprivation, fear, memory and, paradoxically, the promise of awakening. A recurring figure with covered eyes underscores themes of uncertainty, silence and the constraints imposed by circumstance.
The exhibition also revisits the Pardhi community’s historic bond with wildlife, where hunting once sustained livelihoods. By juxtaposing human vulnerability with the raw forces of nature, Channe probes the intertwined struggles for survival and identity.
Open daily from 11 am to 7 pm, ‘Black Whispers’ offers a contemplative space to engage with questions of marginalisation, childhood resilience and the enduring human spirit.
