Chandrashekhar Shilpi remembered for contribution to traditional sculpture
Chandrashekhar Y. Shilpi, the renowned sculptor of Kalyana Karnataka, was honored in a condolence meeting at Rangayana in Kalaburagi. The gathering, organized by the Department of Kannada and Culture and the Karnataka Shilpakala Academy, brought together artists, scholars and officials to celebrate his life and work.
Known especially for dynamic horse sculptures that convey vitality, Shilpi worked across wood, stone and metal, also creating figures of village deities. His mastery attracted international attention, with two Scottish craftsmen spending months learning his techniques.
Speakers called for a permanent museum in Kalaburagi to exhibit his pieces and serve as a training hub, and urged the posthumous conferral of the Amarashilpi Jakanachari Award. His achievements had already earned national honors such as the National Master Craftsman Award, reflecting a career built on patience, dedication and self‑made tools.
His daughter, sculptor Gayatri Shilpi, shared personal memories, underscoring a humble artist who let his work speak louder than any accolade.
