A new four‑panel mural now dominates the façade of the historic Renaissance Building on Otto Boulevard, offering a burst of color and optimism to the neighborhood. Created by Chicago‑based artist Javier Chavira, the work opens with a tribute to Maya Angelou’s poem “Still I Rise,” depicting a bird poised for flight and evoking the mythic phoenix rising from ashes.

Chavira, a longtime professor of painting and drawing at Governors State University and director of the Christopher Gallery at Prairie State College, sees the piece as a visual promise of hope. He describes the swirling bird as a “barn swallow” that captures movement, life’s ripple effect, and the city’s renewal.

The mural adorns the once‑vacant Renaissance Building, a former home of the Chicago Heights Star newspaper that has lain empty for years. Its bright acrylic panels now stand out across the street from the vibrant Union Street Gallery, turning a neglected storefront into a landmark visible from the historic downtown stretch of Lincoln Highway.

The four sections—“Creation,” “Moonlight,” “Celestial,” and the opening “Still I Rise”—are framed by circular motifs. “Creation” hints at an eclipse, “Moonlight” nods to the designs of Charles Rennie MacKintosh, and “Celestial” completes the celestial narrative, each panel blending realism with abstraction.

Local officials and residents have embraced the project. Mayor David Gonzalez praised the mural for bringing “art, character and a new sense of pride” to the street, while gallery staff and longtime community artists describe the work as uplifting and a catalyst for further investment in the area.
