The Phoenix statue, conceived by local artist George Wagstaffe, has long served as a visual reminder of Coventry’s rise from wartime ruin. First unveiled in 1962 by Princess Margaret and recast in bronze in 1983, the work has been shifted around the city centre several times.

Recent demolition for the City Centre South regeneration has left the piece tucked behind hoardings and fencing. Council officials say it will be lifted and installed at a prominent entrance near the former Woolworths (now Poundland) site, giving it a more visible role in the new urban landscape.

The move reinforces the sculpture’s enduring symbolism of renewal, ensuring the Phoenix statue continues to preside over a city that is constantly reshaping itself.
