A proposed replacement for Wandsworth's famous roundabout 'pretzel' has been unveiled, sparking outrage from local residents. The new structure, designed by Tate + Co, is a 25m tall timber tree-inspired sculpture that will support four large digital displays. The original 'pretzel' has been a landmark in the area since 1995 and has been featured in films such as A Clockwork Orange.
The plans, submitted by Wildstone Estates, have received 62 formal objections from residents, who have described the new structure as 'garish' and a 'complete waste of money'. Concerns have also been raised about the potential for light pollution and distraction to drivers. Despite the backlash, Wildstone Estates remains committed to the project, stating that the new sculpture will 'enhance its surroundings' and create a 'nature-inspired landmark'.
The application is still under review by Wandsworth Council, with TfL also raising concerns about the potential impact on road safety. The fate of the proposed sculpture remains uncertain, with many residents eagerly awaiting the council's decision.
