Englishman appears in court after attack on iconic Belfast sculpture

In a shocking episode over the weekend, a 44‑year‑old Englishman identified as Peter Luke Smith was caught on CCTV wielding a hatchet, hammer and sledgehammer, shattering tiles around the statue’s left eye. Police estimated the damage at more than £10,000, and the magistrates’ court has remanded him in custody pending further hearings.
