Final exhibition of the season opens at Maine Art Gallery
The Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset has kicked off its season‑ending show, Made in Maine, offering members a chance to fill the airy Old Academy space with fresh work. The exhibition runs from September 10 through October 18, inviting visitors to explore a lively mix of painting, drawing, textiles, sculpture, photography and assemblage.
Among the highlights are pieces by two of the gallery’s formative figures, Francis Hamabe and Leo Meissner. Hamabe’s playful silkscreens and cartoons capture his love for the state, while Meissner’s masterful woodcuts and pastels reflect a half‑century of summer practice on Monhegan Island. Their legacy pieces sit alongside contemporary contributions, creating a dialogue across generations.
The opening weekend includes a Saturday reception with jazz piano by Sean Fleming, and a live interview on State of the Art with board president Kay Liss and co‑chair Mark Coates. Later in the month the gallery will unveil its renovated lobby and staircase, celebrating the building’s 1807 heritage with a public gathering on September 19.
