Grand Rapids seeks artists to create memorial honoring victims of gun violence
Grand Rapids has opened a competitive request for artists to conceive a memorial that honors the lives touched by gun violence. The city hopes the piece will become a public reminder of loss while offering a sacred space for reflection and dialogue.
The brief calls for a three‑dimensional or mixed‑media sculpture that can work indoors and outdoors, is durable, and can be delivered and installed by no more than two people. Artists must also provide a pedestal, storage container and clear installation instructions.
A selection panel composed of survivors, family members, members of the SAFE Task Force and Grand Rapids police representatives will review proposals. The budget is capped at $20,000 and must cover materials, labor and related activities.
Proposals are due Sept. 21, with a community webinar scheduled for Sept. 11 and installation work expected to begin Oct. 8. Brandon Davis, managing director of the Office of Public Accountability and Office of Equity and Engagement, emphasized the project’s role in healing, while Latesha Lipscomb, the city’s civilian violence‑prevention manager, highlighted its importance for long‑term community recovery.
