His online comic book store is an 'amplifier' for outsider artists
Based in a Denver basement, Jeff Alford runs Wig Shop, an online store that has become a gathering point for fans of off‑beat comics, limited‑run art books and other printed curiosities.
Since launching in 2017, Alford has assigned a catalog number to each of the roughly 1,300 items he sells, all sourced from artists he discovers on Instagram and similar platforms. He favors whimsical, fantastical material over horror or explicit content, and often works with creators who are happy to produce small print‑on‑demand runs.
Among his most ambitious projects is a hand‑lettered edition of The Gods of Pegāna, illustrated chapter by chapter by Denver cartoonist Dustin Holland after a two‑year Kickstarter campaign. He has also published Weavings, a limited‑edition book of abstract watercolors by interior designer Jessica Jimenez Keenan, each copy paired with an original painting on high‑quality paper.
Alford describes the shop as a megaphone for creators, splitting profits once production costs are covered. Though a brick‑and‑mortar space remains a dream, the web‑based storefront continues to grow at a sustainable pace, offering a portal for both comic‑savvy collectors and newcomers to low‑brow art.
