Honouring painters on postage stamps: Inscriptions into India's public memory
The Department of Posts has recently issued a commemorative postage stamp in honour of Satish Gujral, a renowned painter, sculptor, and architect, on his birth centenary year.
The tradition of honouring painters through postage stamps in India began nearly 66 years ago, with the first stamp being issued on the birth centenary of Rabindranath Tagore. This tradition has continued over the decades, with stamps featuring works by prominent Indian artists such as Nandalal Bose, Gaganendranath Tagore, Raja Ravi Varma, and Abanindranath Tagore.
The issuance of these stamps not only pays tribute to individual artists but also inscribes them into the public memory of the nation, making their work accessible to a wider audience. The postal department has effectively transformed the postage stamp into a miniature national art gallery, featuring works by major painters and recognising modern Indian painting as a cultural subject in its own right.
