Hyundai Motor and Tate Announce the Opening of Hyundai Commission: Tarek Atoui: Hold

Hyundai Commission: Tarek Atoui: Hold turns the vast Turbine Hall of Tate Modern into an all‑encompassing sonic environment where sound is felt as much by the body as by the ears. By weaving sculpture, performance, music, technology and social research, the work invites visitors to sit, lie down or simply gaze upward as wind‑driven instruments and electronic systems create a living orchestra.

The installation assembles an eclectic mix of custom‑built wind instruments, shengs, Korean drums, Uzbek karnai trumpets and 3D‑printed horns, suspended among bamboo, long textiles and lithophone‑like stones. A computer‑controlled motor channels air through the structures, while embedded microphones capture and reprocess the sounds in real time, generating an ever‑changing soundscape.

Throughout its six‑month run the hall becomes a stage for live, sound‑based performances. Musicians from around the world plug into the system, improvising alongside the autonomous instruments, ensuring that each visit offers a fresh auditory experience.

Marking the 11th edition of the Hyundai Commission, the project celebrates a decade‑long partnership between Hyundai Motor and Tate Modern, now extended to 2036. The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to artistic innovation and to expanding public access to contemporary art.
