Inside RM’s first art exhibition at SFMOMA with his decade-old Korean art collection
RM, long celebrated as the leader of BTS, steps behind the wall as a curator with the debut exhibition Between You and Me at SFMOMA. The show pulls from a decade‑old personal collection, shining a spotlight on modern and contemporary Korean art that has rarely been seen in the United States.
The gallery presents works by seminal figures such as Yun Hyong‑keun, Park Rehyun, and Chang Ucchin, alongside ceramics, calligraphy, painting and sculpture that trace Korea’s artistic trajectory. Many of the pieces are making their U.S. debut, offering a fresh narrative of a vibrant cultural history.
Organized into seven themed rooms, the exhibition moves from the stark opening of the Overture—anchored by Kim Whan‑ki’s blue‑dot painting 26‑I‑70—to the immersive Bluewater, where shades of blue suggest infinity and metaphysical space. Home and Person with Passion creates a cozy, resilient atmosphere, while the whimsically titled IDK but I like it invites viewers to enjoy art without over‑analysis. A quieter Umber room foregrounds the meditative earth tones of Dansaekhwa artists, deepening the dialogue between East and West.
Accompanying audio guides feature RM’s own commentary, turning each work into a personal conversation. By bridging cultural boundaries and inviting a broader audience into Korean modernism, the exhibition positions itself as both a personal introduction and a sturdy cultural bridge. The show runs from October through February 2027.
