New Milford Arts Commission Approves $3K For Projects, Considers Arts Coordinator Position

Winter concert plans are taking shape as the commission set aside $1,500 for the Afro‑Semitic Experience, aiming for a January 17 performance that will highlight civil‑rights themes through music and student artwork. Funding also moved forward for a “Be Kind” mural at John Pettibone School, a modest $500 contribution that hinges on additional community fundraising, and a $750 advertising boost for an upcoming show at the historic Merwinsville Hotel. Smaller grants, including $200 for a Girl Scouts initiative, round out a slate of modest but targeted investments.

A recurring topic was the potential creation of a town arts coordinator. Chair Lou Mandler reported a comparative study of similar roles in nearby municipalities and outlined duties ranging from maintaining an online arts calendar to facilitating permits and partnership building. While the idea garnered support, commissioners noted that any hire would require a budget amendment and a formal proposal before the council could act.

The commission also refined plans for its annual Carol Sing on Dec. 12, adding new songs, LED lighting, and strategic placement of child choirs to enhance the festive atmosphere. Meanwhile, local organizations shared updates: the Merwinsville Hotel secured a matching grant for roof repairs and is preparing an exhibition featuring over 70 artists; TheatreWorks New Milford will stage a reading of a new play by Diana Canova; Gallery 25 readied an exhibition reception and silent auction; and the Village Center for the Arts launched an after‑school program for youth ages 8‑14.

Financially, the commission reported a $39,600 annual budget with $9,697 already spent, leaving a healthy balance after earmarking $2,000 for RiverFest. An updated grant application process was reviewed, emphasizing post‑project reporting to ensure accountability for future funding.
