New Palo Alto art gallery launches with 'Calder
The historic post‑office building on Palo Alto’s main street has been reborn as a sleek new space for Hauser & Wirth. The gallery joins the firm’s New York and Los Angeles locations and immediately stakes its claim with a striking inaugural show.
Titled Calder | O’Keeffe, the exhibition draws a subtle line between two giants of American modernism. Both artists pursued fluid, almost biomorphic forms that echo the natural world, turning geometry into a living language.
Beyond formal parallels, the show highlights a warm personal rapport that blossomed in the later years of their lives. They exchanged postcards, posed together for photographs and traded intimate objects – a brass brooch Calder crafted with O’Keeffe’s initials, which she wore vertically to render it abstract, and a lyrical black mobile that found a permanent home in O’Keeffe’s Abiquiu residence.
The gallery’s program extends beyond the walls with a curated bookshop, talks and special events, positioning the venue as a new cultural hub for the Bay Area.
