Our 'Happy Thoughts' on magical new Neverland experience beside Birmingham Christmas market
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery has transformed its Gas Hall into a whimsical Neverland experience, inviting visitors to wander through Peter Pan’s world amid the city’s festive buzz.
The walk‑through begins with a London‑inspired hallway that carries a distinct Birmingham chocolate twist, then leads into the Darling family’s cozy home before soaring toward the Second Star on the Right. Every corner offers photo‑worthy set pieces, hand‑crafted props, hidden fairies, a tent of Lost Boys and even a sensory cake that delights the senses.
Along the way guests meet Nana the dog, exchange cheeky glances with a clock‑ticking crocodile, and finally come face‑to‑face with a surprisingly jovial Captain James Hook whose dad‑joke banter makes the notorious villain feel more like a welcoming guide aboard his galleon.
A charitable thread runs through the adventure: J.M. Barrie left the rights to Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Hospital, and a wishing tree invites visitors to send good thoughts toward the children’s hospital, with proceeds supporting its care.
The experience lasts about an hour, making it an ideal warm‑up for the Birmingham REP’s own Peter Pan production, and it adds a magical stop to the Christmas market scene around the German Market and Chamberlain Square.
