Provocative art show pulled from UNT this year finds a new home
Victor "Marka27" Quiñonez’s exhibition Ni de Aquí, Ni de Allá opened at University of North Texas in February, only to be pulled after a week of student protests and national attention.\n\nThe show blended vivid canvases, a traditional botanica filled with spiritual objects, and oversized resin sculptures shaped like Mexican popsicles, channeling the artist’s immigrant background and community narratives.\n\nBecause the project is a traveling exhibition funded by BU, Quiñonez was able to relocate it. After an aborted plan with Dallas Contemporary, the University of California, Santa Cruz’s Center for Art and Advocacy and Institute of the Arts and Sciences stepped in to host the work.\n\nQuiñonez says his practice is rooted in lived experience—recalling his mother’s market encounters after his father’s deportation—and insists that speaking truth to power, even unapologetically, is essential to showcasing the beauty, struggle, and resilience of his community.
