Raja Ravi Varma awards for C. Douglas, N.N. Rimzon

The State’s highest accolade in visual arts, the Raja Ravi Varma Award, was announced this week, spotlighting two distinguished figures of Indian contemporary art. The 2023 award went to C. Douglas, a veteran of the Madras Art Movement, while the 2024 honor was bestowed on sculptor N.N. Rimzon, whose work has resonated across generations.

A jury of senior artists praised Douglas for his experimental practice and a universal, humanistic style that transcends regional boundaries. His long‑standing contribution to contemporary Indian painting was highlighted as a key factor in his selection.

Rimzon’s selection was driven by his multi‑decadal career that began in the 1980s, marked by major exhibitions at home and abroad. The jury noted his influential sculptural practice and his role in shaping younger artists. Both awardees will receive a cash prize, a citation, and a sculpture designed by renowned artist Kanayi Kunhiraman.
