Rare Sculpture From Telangana Finds Place Global Antiquity Exhibition
A rare fourth-century limestone sculpture of Hariti from the Telangana State Museum was recently showcased at the international antiquities exhibition One Mother, Many Mother Tongues in New Delhi.
The sculpture, which depicts a seated female holding a child, is a significant representation of Hariti, a figure in Buddhist tradition who transformed from a child-abducting entity to a guardian and protector of children, symbolizing fertility, protection, and maternal care.
The exhibition, centered on the theme of motherhood, brought together various artistic representations of the mother-and-child motif from India and the Mediterranean world, including Mater Matuta of ancient Italy and the Madonna and Child tradition of the Italian Renaissance.
The sculpture's participation in the exhibition provides a valuable platform for showcasing the rich archaeological and artistic heritage of the region to a wider audience.
