Raza’s ‘Jala Bindu’, Husain’s diptych to go under the hammer
An upcoming auction is set to feature a range of works by celebrated figures in Indian modern art, including SH Raza, MF Husain, and Arpita Singh.
The sale brings together rare and important works that trace the evolution of Indian modernism, spanning abstraction, figuration, landscape, mythology, and personal narrative. Leading the sale is Raza’s ‘Jala Bindu’ (1990), a painting that transforms geometry into a metaphysical proposition, and an Untitled diptych by Husain, executed around 1970, which belongs to a period widely regarded as one of the most inventive phases of Husain’s career.
Other notable works up for auction include Husain’s Untitled piece centered on the horse, a rare, paired work by Husain created as part of the artist’s ‘Our Planet Called Earth’ series, and an Untitled canvas by Arpita Singh, painted in 1999, which explores themes of intimacy, memory, and domestic life. The sale also features notable works by Krishen Khanna, J Swaminathan, and Hemendranath Mazumdar, offering collectors an opportunity to acquire museum-worthy examples by artists who continue to define the canon of Indian art.
