Renowned Artist Jogen Chowdhury Passes Away at 87; CM Mamata Banerjee, Suvendu Adhikari Express Condolences
Veteran Indian modernist Jogen Chowdhury died at 87, leaving a profound silence in the art world. After a long battle with blood cancer and infection, he passed away in Kolkata, prompting tributes from cultural and political circles.
Renowned for his bold, expressive lines and vibrant colour blocks, Chowdhury reshaped the visual language of contemporary Indian painting. His works, ranging from haunting figurative canvases to lyrical abstractions, have been exhibited globally and continue to inspire a new generation of artists.
Beyond the studio, he served as a Rajya Sabha member from 2014 to 2020, using his platform to champion the arts. In 2012 he received the prestigious Banga Bibhushan, a testament to his role as a cultural ambassador for Bengal.
His departure creates an irreparable void, but his legacy endures in museums, collections and the countless creators who follow his distinctive stroke.
