Sculpture depicting contemporary ‘everywoman’ unveiled on London’s Fourth Plinth
On Tuesday a new bronze figure titled Lady In Blue appeared on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, offering a fresh take on the everyday woman as a public monument.
The work is by New York‑born artist Tschabalala Self, known for vibrant paintings and sculptures that examine the female form. The statue shows a young metropolitan woman in a blue‑dressed pose, with lapis‑lazuli‑coloured jewellery, turning the ordinary into the monumental.
Self described the figure as "an everyday person… striding forward into our collective future with ambition, purpose and optimism." The commissioning panel, chaired by Ekow Eshun, selected the piece to replace Teresa Margolles’s previous work, continuing the Fourth Plinth’s tradition of rotating contemporary art every two years.
The installation underscores the plinth’s role as a platform for dialogue, inviting Londoners and visitors to see themselves reflected in a public sculpture that celebrates the city’s diversity and dynamism.
