Sir Hare sculpture returns permanently to Rawtenstall
Sir Hare, a 3.6‑metre public artwork by Marjan Wouda, has been installed permanently in the heart of Rawtenstall after a spirited community campaign.
The sculpture first attracted wide attention during its 2023 exhibition at The Whitaker before embarking on a tour. A groundswell of local support, backed by funding from Lancashire County Council, businesses and individuals, secured its return.
Now situated among the town’s temporary market, the hare watches shoppers and anchors a space that reflects the Pennine landscape and Lancashire folklore, echoing place‑names such as Hareholme.
The public unveiling was celebrated by council leaders who hope the piece will enrich the valley’s cultural life for many years.
