Sobha Singh’s masterpieces brought laurels to nation: Punjabi University VC
Vice‑Chancellor Prof Jagdeep Singh and his wife Dr Sukhjit Kaur paid a heartfelt visit to the Sobha Singh Art Gallery and Museum in Andretta, taking in the original paintings and treasured memorabilia of the celebrated Punjabi artist. The duo expressed delight at seeing Sobha Singh’s work up close, noting the honor of the university’s recent DLitt award to the master.
During the tour, Singh praised Sobha Singh as an artist of international renown whose canvases have brought “great laurels” to the nation. The meeting came as the university prepares a year‑long series of events to mark the 125th birth anniversary of the painter, scheduled from November 2026 to November 2027.
Representatives of the Sobha Singh Memorial Art Society, led by KG Butail, discussed a slate of initiatives: a memorial lecture, a publication of selected letters, doctoral research projects, and a special exhibition on the university’s Andretta campus. Prof Singh welcomed the proposals, promising active support for academic and cultural programming.
The visit concluded with personal gestures—a canvas of Bhai Kanhaiya presented by Sobha Singh’s daughter Gurcharan Kaur, and a newly released book titled Sobha Singh: Artist, Life and Legacy offered by Dr Hirday Paul Singh—underscoring the deep, ongoing connection between the artist’s family and the academic community.
