Sonic the Hedgehog gets $6,000 Arita porcelain sculpture for 35th anniversary
Sonic the iconic blue hedgehog receives a rare porcelain tribute for his 35th anniversary. The Infinite Blue sculpture, crafted from Arita ware, is limited to 50 pieces and priced at ¥1 million (about $6,000) in Japan, with a $7,000 overseas price that includes tax and shipping.
The piece was born from a partnership between the digital‑craft studio 224porcelain and the historic Riso Kiln. Traditional Arita techniques—such as the cobalt “gosu” pigment applied beneath the glaze—give Sonic his signature, unfading blue. Three classic Japanese motifs—Shippo, Seigaiha and Yagasuri—decorate the curves, while an infinity‑shaped trail is highlighted in red enamel, a nod to the character’s endless speed.
Production took eight months, with artisans shaping only one or two sculptures per day and repeatedly testing molds to prevent warping. The finished work measures 15.6 cm wide, 22.8 cm deep and 21.3 cm tall, and comes with an edition number, certificate, base and wooden box.
The sculpture will debut at SONIC the Exhibition –ACROSS GENERATIONS– in Tokyo’s PARCO FACTORY, where five pieces are sold on‑site and the rest are allocated through an online lottery running from October 9 to October 18. Shipping reaches twelve regions, including the US, UK and EU, with delivery expected up to ten months after purchase.
YOYOYO, the brand behind the release, positions itself at the intersection of Japanese porcelain heritage and contemporary pop‑culture collectibles, following its earlier limited‑run Tachikoma figure in Nabeshima ware.
