Southeastern Contemporary Art Gallery to present solo exhibition by Ghanaian-American artist
Arsenal is the new solo show by Ghanaian‑American artist Addoley Dzegede, on view at the Contemporary Art Gallery of Southeastern Louisiana University from Oct. 6 through Nov. 5.
The exhibition looks back to the mid‑19th‑century surge in color chemistry, pairing natural and synthetic dyes with a range of hands‑on techniques—batik, screen printing, mordant painting and more. The title evokes the colonial contests over dye sources and the uncanny link between dye chemistry and weaponry, positioning color as a material caught in cultural and political conflict.
Beyond textiles, Arsenal expands into moving‑image works by Carolina Caycedo, Rachel De Cuba, and Kelly Jin Mei, each weaving fabric references into cinematic narratives that probe pattern, embodiment, labor and material transformation.
A series of public events deepens the dialogue: a textile‑dyeing workshop on Nov. 2, an artist talk on Nov. 5, and a closing reception the same evening. The program invites visitors to consider how color functions as both a sensory experience and a site of historical entanglement.
