Striking Hull waterfront sculpture set to be created at Fruit Market
Annabel McCourt, a Grimsby‑born artist known for large public works, has won a commission to create a striking new sculpture for Hull’s Fruit Market waterfront.
The piece, titled Resonant Tides (After the Strike), reimagines the iconic gong of the Rank Organisation as a deconstructed, nine‑segment form that rises like tidal waves or ripples of sound, linking Hull’s cinematic heritage with its riverine geography.
Installed near the Stage @TheDock amphitheatre, the work will sit where the River Hull meets the Humber, echoing the city’s historic ties to J Arthur Rank and the 1935 film Turn of the Tide.
The project is funded by Wykeland Group, the Brignall family and their charitable trust, with a £72,500 budget, and serves as a celebration of the Fruit Market’s regeneration and Hull’s vibrant cultural scene.
For McCourt, the commission feels like a full‑circle moment, tying together her earlier Hull projects—from the 2017 City of Culture installation Electric Fence to recent shows at the Humber Street Gallery—while offering a new landmark for residents and visitors alike.
