Sussex Univ to display sculpture inspired by RG Kar Horror
Artist Asit Sain has transformed a harrowing tragedy into a bronze meditation on loss. The piece, titled Cry of the Hour, was forged in the wake of the 2024 murder of doctor RG Kar, a case that sparked massive protests across India and beyond. Sain’s 18‑inch, 12‑kg sculpture captures the final, anguished moments of the slain physician, its raw form a stark reminder of the human cost of gender‑based violence.
The work arrived at the University of Sussex through the invitation of the Global Empathy Community, which recognized its universal resonance. Displayed by the University Artworks Group, the sculpture sits alongside a body of Sain’s paintings, offering viewers a tactile entry point into a narrative that extends far beyond the campus walls.
Beyond its aesthetic presence, the exhibition signals a growing willingness of academic institutions to engage with contemporary social trauma through art. By hosting Cry of the Hour, Sussex not only amplifies a voice of mourning but also underscores the role of sculpture as a catalyst for empathy and dialogue in the global arena.
