Sycamore Gap themed Peter Rabbit sculpture to be auctioned three years after Northumberland tree felling
A hand‑painted sculpture titled The Dream, created by Whitley Bay artist Darren Mundy, reimagines the fallen Sycamore Gap tree on a Peter Rabbit figure, turning a beloved landscape loss into a public‑art statement.
The piece was part of the nine‑week Peter Rabbit™: Tales on the Tyne trail that wound through Newcastle and North Tyneside, supporting St Oswald’s Hospice and marking the 40th anniversary of the hospice and the 160th birthday of Beatrix Potter.
Now, 40 of the 96 uniquely decorated rabbit sculptures will be offered at auction in Newcastle Civic Centre on 13 October, giving a buyer the chance to own a weatherproof, acrylic‑painted reminder of the iconic tree.
Mundy, who has painted the Sycamore Gap tree throughout his 16‑year career, says the work captures the emotional attachment many felt when the tree was felled, and hopes the sculpture will bring beauty and memory to any garden.
The auction is accompanied by a celebration weekend on 10‑11 October, allowing the public a final chance to view the collection before it disperses, with online bidding also available.
