The heartwarming reason why there’s a giant 39
Outside The Ivy Spinningfields a massive 39‑foot (almost 12 m) polar bear sculpture has been installed, billed as the world’s tallest polar bear figure. The towering white form dominates Spinningfields Square, instantly becoming a festive focal point for passers‑by.
The display is more than spectacle; the restaurant group has pledged 371 polar‑bear teddy toys to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, each teddy representing one of the hospital’s beds. The gesture aims to bring comfort to young patients throughout the holiday season.
A pop‑up stall on the square offered a limited edition collection of 250 Ivy polar‑bear teddies, available for a single day in exchange for donations that fund the hospital pledge.
Lisa Biard, General Manager of The Ivy Spinningfields, explained that the project was designed to "bring a little festive magic to the heart of the city" while supporting families facing the stress of a hospital stay. Angela Rowe of Manchester Foundation Trust Charity praised the initiative, noting the lasting impact of the funds raised for patient care.
The giant bear arrives as Manchester prepares for its annual Christmas markets, adding a striking visual cue to the city’s seasonal celebrations.
