Thomas Houseago on Connection, Sculpture, and the Body in Paris
Thomas Houseago and Théo Mercier are joining forces for the sixth edition of Reiffers Initiatives Mentorship Program in Paris. Each will set up a temporary studio, inviting visitors to witness their making process up close, and the collaboration will close with a joint exhibition during Art Basel Paris. The project is presented as a space for dialogue rather than a hierarchical mentorship.
Houseago describes the encounter as a chance for genuine connection, noting how sculpture, dance and performance intersect in Mercier’s work and in his own practice. He emphasizes conversation and openness over any notion of generational hierarchy.
A central concern of the program is mental health. Houseago plans to bring his treatment manager, Eli Machen, to Paris for talks that link artistic practice with wellbeing, aiming to create a supportive environment for artists.
Both artists speak of the body as a site of healing. Houseago reflects on how somatic awareness informs his sculptural language, turning the act of making into a mindful, restorative experience that extends beyond the studio.
