The Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA) will host a Turner Prize exhibition from 26 September 2026 to 29 March 2027, showcasing all four shortlisted artists of the 2026 prize. The regional venue, now in its twentieth year, gains a rare national spotlight through this 'prestigious opportunity'.

The programme includes Simeon Barclay’s hour‑long spoken‑word work The Ruin, a meditation on Britishness, class, race and masculine identity. Kira Freije presents her first major solo show Unspeak The Chorus at The Hepworth Wakefield, featuring sculptural investigations of universal human emotions. Marguerite Humeau’s exhibition Torches probes the origins of life, ancient history and imagined futures, while Tanoa Sasraku offers Morale Patch at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, a critique of recent political and military narratives surrounding oil.

Director Dr Laura Sillars described the event as a 'huge, prestigious opportunity' that connects the four exceptional practices with the histories and imaginations of Middlesbrough, Teesside and the North East. She highlighted MIMA’s position at the crossroads of art, learning and public life, and thanked the artists and staff for making the moment possible.

The Turner Prize, founded in 1984 and named after JMW Turner, remains one of Britain’s most influential visual‑art awards. It awards £25,000 to the winner and £10,000 to each shortlisted artist, aiming to provoke public debate about contemporary developments in British art.
