Weird-looking sculpture to be removed from Brighton lawn
A strange, ramshackle sculpture has dominated a grassy patch outside Coastal Counties House on John Street for up to a year, drawing curiosity and consternation in equal measure.
Residents complained that the structure, built from accumulated rubbish and seemingly never anchored, posed a safety hazard, especially for children who were seen climbing on it. Voices ranged from alarm ("It's a nightmare") to bemusement ("each to his own").
After a formal inspection, Brighton and Hove City Council confirmed the work had no planning permission and ordered its removal, with deputy leader Tim Rowkins noting the city's quirky spirit but stressing public safety.
The piece sparked online speculation on Reddit, where users debated its purpose and artistic intent, highlighting how even improvised public art can become a flashpoint for community dialogue.
