A new steel sculpture now stands beside the Student Achievement Center at Westmoreland County Community College. The work depicts an American flag flanked by three human silhouettes, each carved with the words 'remember' and 'community', honoring the victims and first‑responders of September 11, 2001.

The piece was designed and built over two and a half months by six student artists—Zea Zingarelli, Megan Ranker, Luke Sechrist, Nevaeh Collins, Sarah Palmer and William Custodio—who worked in the college’s MADE space, an innovation lab that houses metalworking and woodworking tools.

The three flag panels are meant to symbolize past, present and future, while the silhouettes highlight both the brave responders and everyday citizens whose stories often go untold. The artists hope viewers will pause, reflect on the tragedy, and look toward a hopeful future.

Faculty members note that the project gave students a hands‑on way to engage with a historic event that many only know from textbooks, turning a memorial into a collective expression of remembrance, strength, unity and hope.
